i also do graphic design ;)

I don’t really update this old guy anymore. The work is less in the writing and more in the booking shows aspect, which so far, with the Zorche/Hat Talk/Come & Conquer show a couple of weeks back, as well as last night’s A Living Soundtrack/Junglenoize/Villain Heirs/Japan Four show, everything seems to be getting off on a good foot. Both shows have had awesome turnouts, and exhibited highly diverse lineups. More to come.
Make sure to check out the upcoming Wildfires/Moose Tour show in Lafayette. It’s not a DTB show per se, but one not to miss nonetheless. This Horrible Machine and The Obelisk will also be playing.

ZORCH is an awesome two piece from Austin, Tx. The first band I thought of upon hearing them was Health, due to the low-fi, vocoder-sounding vocals. As I ventured further and further into their myspace tracks, several different sounds and influences came to mind. They range from long instrumental jam textures not dissimilar to Tortoise, and sometimes get straight poppy on a mother fucker, looping uppity noises over upbeat drums similar to noise-pop forefathers Joan Of Arc. Though they do have vocals, they are pretty low in the mix, and serve as a means of texture more so than storytelling or as a lead “instrument”.
These guys will be stopping through on tour, bringing with them Hat Talk, an instrumental space prog-metal band trying their hand at being a three piece, with the recent departure of Christopher Thompson.
Also playing will be Come & Conquer, a newly formed “side project” made up of Wildfires, Jupiter Death Brigade, and The Fight Between Frames members. This will be the first show for C&C. Expect flailing bodies and hyperfast angry hardcore punk rock.

opinions, opinions, opinions. everyone has them, some of us wear them on our sleeve. some peoples’ opinions are more biased than others, some peoples’ opinions are unfounded. and then some peoples’ opinions are established simply to make themselves feel better about the fact that all the people that they judge and speak down on are out doing things and breaking molds and pushing barriers and moving mountains that those ever so opinionated people couldn’t even begin to touch on. they hide behind their electronic wall of infinite vagueness and point fingers, and then they sit there behind their electronic walls of infinite vagueness for the rest of the evening, wishing they possessed the integrity, know-how, and initiative to make shit happen, as all the people they talk down upon possess.
arguments of what is punk and what is not, hypocrisy, mundane lives of counting all of the people you one up daily on your fingers and toes. i invite you people, the ones who are EVER so opinionated, to venture out, and lead by example, instead of locking yourself in your room with your sewn on patches, your fancy toys, your concept of how things should be. what kind of artful things have you done and do you do with your existence in order to feel justified in waving your flag in other peoples’ faces?
at times we are all guilty of judging others unjustifiably, but do you realize that you’re doing it and strive to lead by example, or do you continue to sit there with your cock in your hand, placing blame and telling it like you feel it should be?
DTB was started for you, the underground music obsessor, as a blog to let you know what is going on locally in the name of artful entertainment. Unfortunately, big ol’ one upping mouths couldn’t keep themselves shut, people couldn’t help but crack jokes and make parody blogs, and people helping me out don’t have the extra cash, or free time to make as many shows as I have and continue to do, which, I can’t really blame any of you.
In Lafayette, very few of us attempt to make it a prerogative to make it out to as many shows as possible, much less make a life out of it. It would be unreasonable of me to expect all of you to give a shit as much as I do, and cheer me on instead of making yourselves feel better by making little quips and snickering behind my back.
This has made making this blog an effective source of local underground musical information nearly impossible, which makes this blog practically useless.
With that said, though this blog will continue to remain and periodically be updated, I am focusing more on actually getting my hands dirty, in booking out of town and touring bands, and perhaps Lafayette locals who trust me enough to throw some shows together for them here and there. If you appreciate what you hear, pick up a copy at a show. we paid good money for them and can definitely use the gas money to stay on the road as much as possible.
anyone who knows me knows that i think austin, texas is an overly dramatized fashion show full of trust punks with crust funds, friends that we/i used to have who’ve “moved on” to “bigger and better” “things”, one uppers, fart huffers, and the like.
granted, i have some long time friends who live in austin. like always, there are the exceptions.
but what makes austin such a mecca of culture and music, is that the people who live there actually give a fuck about going to shows and supporting local/touring musicians. upon entering dollar night (which i ended up very drunkenly leaving way earlier than i normally do, my apologies) i realized that, seriously, it takes an arm and a leg to get people to come to shows or underground DJ events in lafayette and the surrounding area.
while in austin, i tried to contact a couple of friends to come check us (wildfires) out at the 21st co-op around late afternoon this passed saturday. most of them couldn’t make it. why? CAUSE THEY WERE ALREADY AT OTHER SHOWS. BEAUTIFUL!
in lafayette, when people can’t make it, it’s because they’re playing beer pong or doing something equally as counter-productive. admittedly, i love playing beer pong, and other drinking games related to it. BUT, i definitely lose my interest in it after 2 or so rounds. maybe we in lafayette are too easily entertained and oblivious to the concept of functioning as an arts-related community to function as an arts-related community. everyone seems to have an opinion on the matter, and most people seem to be really supportive of what i preach. but i’m not seeing 85% of those people at any more shows (not just ours, shows in fucking general) than they used to go to, though they make it a point to wave the ‘support the scene’ flag. it’s a slap in the face to all of the musicians who bust their ass to make lousy door cut at the end of the night. the least musicians want is to just have people watching. you don’t even have to clap. all they need and want is your eyes. is that too much to ask?
also, i find it disgusting when a venue and the people who operate it so diligently promote themselves towards musicians and artists who they refuse to book and support. i’m not going to name anyone in particular, but really, if you aren’t willing to support all forms of art and music, don’t expect me or any of the musicians you shun and continue to shun to support your venue or your cause. why would i/we support a cause that is resistant towards the very art that we live every single day whole heartedly?
STOP SEGREGATING THE SCENE, YOU ARE THE REASON IT IS DYING.
(again, to re-iterate, i am not singling out anyone in particular).

mission vs madness and the chatty cathies. upbeat, heavy, raw punk rock from lafayette. do it.

besides the before mentioned birthday house show featuring blast motherfucking rag, there is also jazz night at bisbano’s featuring a good friend of mine named ed cousson on bass (fucking incredible musician), and a benefit for another buddy of mine, chase dugas at sadie’s. here is a copy/pasted description of the benefit from it’s facebook event page:
Back in september, the day I was graduating from college, my truck caught on fire with me underneth it. I was in the hospital(ICU) till the begining of January having 3 surgeries on my face and hands. I am having a benefit to cover part of the expenses of this unfortunate accident due to the fact I’ve been out of work and are temporally disabled. It will be night filled with great bands, friends and beer. Bands include[ ( Kid midi, dege legg(Santeria), Julian Primeaux (The Howdies), Souls on Monday, Jamie Kelley(Cracker Jackson)] plus more bands to be announced!!!!! Only $5 plus donations are greatly accepted!!!
so alright, there’s 3 shows right there, just tonight to pick from. you have jazz at bisbano’s, a punk rock house show birthday party, and benefit featuring several different types of music (what sadie’s does best). if you don’t make it out to one, it better be cause you have school work. actually i’m kidding, you nerdy asshole. get that shit out of the way and get your ass to one of these fine musical environments.
review and pictures of show last friday at sadie’s coming soon.
tonight at sadie’s

thursday night! chrysi’s 26th b-day party! watch a slimmed down version of blast rag as well as several touring bands. watch her voyage into the drunken joyous depths of the birthday world! cake and 80’s dance party follow the show as well! bring donations for the touring bands!

friday night at sadie’s! punkish and metalish and heavyish fans of all those bands should be there, or of course….die.

THIS SATURDAY!! geronimo fest all over downtown lafayette! an all day long epic music festival of independent bands. all sorts of genres, all sorts of stages to pick from. if you miss out on this, we aren’t friends anymore.

sunday at the swamp!!!! touring metal bands, local metal bands. if you aren’t into metal, this show will pretty much suck if you get stuck at it. but otherwise, deterrence is from fucking CANADA. CA-NA-DA. that’s no 8 hour drive. yeah, support those dudes on the serious.

supporting the local scene does not mean telling someone their band is good and then just never going to see them. it is not booking the same lineup show after show after show. it is not segregating genres according to venues.
it’s about SUPPORT. pay those measly $5. book different bands every time you book a show. go to see bands that you don’t even care for. offer to help out with whatever skills you have.
don’t just sit there and criticize from a far, get up in this shit and actually help it to manifest. attempt to move some mountains. host house shows. bring in out of town bands by emailing them and asking them how much they require to come through our town. offer them a floor to crash on. make them some food.
you might have heard of every band known to existence, analyzed every genre ever brought about, bought every shiny new piece of equipment that guitar center has to offer. but what are you doing with it? are you putting it to use, or are you masturbating to thoughts of yourself ripping a sick solo in front of an arena of people?
you have to work at this shit if you want it to…WORK. what’s that, you don’t have time? you have school? you have work? find a way to make it happen. fix it yourself, it’s not everyone else’s problem that you don’t have time to go to more than one snarky puppy show a month, but it IS your problem that bands aren’t being supported because you exhibit a lack of dedication to your local scene.
i’ve seen a lot of people, and i even have a lot of friends who PROMOTE LIKE FUCK for their band, and expect you to be at their shows, but when it comes time for them to support other bands, it’s always “oh dude i’m broke,” “oh dude i’m sick,” “oh dude i have work early,” “oh dude i have homework”.
there is more to life than a shitty job and going to school for something you aren’t even passionate about. i have seen so many friends get their degrees and then just fuck around for the next 10 years. if that’s what you’re ACTUALLY passionate about, so be it. but music is art, and everyone loves art to one extent or another. so if you’d like it not to vanish into the thin, sports-obsessed, coonass air that surrounds us in this town, then do something about it instead of gossiping with your buddies. thank you.

we’ve recently been experiencing the wrath of a couple of minor obstacles. our apologies. we’ll be back in action with the pictures and reviews and listings quite shortly. in the mean time, check out this amazingly diverse lineup this friday at sadie’s niteclub. if you get there before 10 pm, it’s only $3!
