Honey Pillow Interview

Honey Pillow started as a side project of Magic Legs not too long after the conception of said band, and since their indefinite break has blossomed into one of the most eclectic and shamelessly experimental local acts in the area, especially for a two piece. The band incorporates inexpensive casio keyboard beats with more inexpensive casio keyboard synth leads, intentionally cheese ball guitar leads, and vocals that appear seldomly, but are performed to perfection and done so in a sing-a-long context. HP plays tonight, January 29th @ Artmosphere with Caddywhompus and Smiley With A Knife.
DTB - In 5 words or less, how would you describe your sound?
HP - Daft, Calculated, Fantasy, Queer.
DTB - Where did you guys come up with a name like HoneyPillow? What’s the origin?
HP - Honey is one of nature’s wonders and has been a treasured commodity for centuries. Pillows are designed to provide support and comfort to the body.
Sounds like us right?
DTB - What are your main influences?
HP - I’m not sure what exactly transfers from our interests into influencing how and what we play, but while writing, we are often times under the influence…. what was the question?
Of course our frozen guinea pig, Freud, is a continued inspiration.
DTB - What genre would you consider HoneyPillow?
HP - Well we dabble in Horror, Comedy, Sci Fi, Action, and sometimes Drama.
DTB - Are you guys working on any other projects?
HP - Brycen plays drums with imagineIAM.
DTB - How long have you two known each other? What made this all possible?
HP - We met in 2003, during lunch breaks in high school.Case was generous, sometimes sharing his lunch with me.
From there our Bonnie and Clyde-esque friendship grew.
We started playing music together in 2005 and have continued in one band or another ever since. HP itself came about sometime mid 2007.
It began as a just for fun thing until it snowballed into the monster that it is today. Sharing residency has certainly helped make it all possible.
DTB - Where have you performed? What are some your favorite local venues?
HP - We’ve played at Artmoshphere, Sadies, Bisbano’s, and a couple of house shows. So far, Sadies has been the most conducive to our sound. We are currently working on sounding good everywhere. We would like to play in the Cajun Dome, but we’ll settle for the Blackham Coliseum.
DTB - Who writes the music? Are there any themes that you guys drive for?
HP - We write the music together, forever. As for themes, I wouldn’t say we go for any particular one. Quite the contrary! We tend to jump from theme to theme with such provocative subject matter as prostitution, cannibalism, theft, meeting ladies, or simply cruising the night. It seems there’s a tendency towards criminal activities, but that’s not intentional. We’re just wild like that.
DTB - How often do you get together to create new music?
HP - Oh, I don’t know, a number of times a month? When you live together, it kind of goes down whenever.
DTB - Where can we hear your music? Online?
Some songs are available at http://www.myspace.com/honeypillz . Not enough of them are available but some are. The best thing to do is come to our shows and get our album, Night Cruisers. It’s a good one.
DTB - Any final statements?
HP - Just remember what ol’ HP does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, HoneyPillow just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and says, “Give us your best shot, pal. We can take it.”
